I'll Listen To Offers

It's amazing how a small thing like listing your house for sale can turn a quiet, loving woman, one who nurtures children and puppies, kittens, baby mice and every other stray she has ever taken in, present company notwithstanding, into a raving, hollering, threatening cleaning lady from dust bunny hell. She claims the house is a stye not even a pig would want. She has a way with words, doesn't she? That and long legs.

Anyway, she carries an ever lengthing chore list in her back pocket....

Springtime

Well, Spring has finally arrived for good here in the big woods. In fact, it has embraced us with mild temperatures and warm rains, with blue skies, green leaves and whispering breezes. It's wonderful. It's light by 5:00 a.m. and not really dark until after 9:00 p.m. The blueberry blossoms have survived the late season frosts and it should be a sweet harvest. Imagine that.

The fish in our lake have moved into the shallows. First it's the little ones, followed by bigger ones and so on up...

We're Having Pie

Temperature right now is 54, they're predicting sun and 80s this afternoon. I saw my first fawns of spring. They crossed the driveway in front of me trailing behind mom on semi-wobbly legs. I know the doe. She is four years old and the matriarch of a family clan that passed through here every day. Deer are an almost daily sighting coming and going on our meandering, woodland driveway.

Blueberries! It looks like we're going to have some blueberries this summer afterall. The spring starte...

It's Tradition

Well, it finally got warm for a few days here in the Great North Woods and that's good. The flip side, there's always a flip side, it got real windy. A warm wind blowing through a dry pine forest in spring is bad ... very bad!

The DNR has rated the forest fire danger at VERY HIGH. Glup!

We're putting the roll-in dock in the lake this weekend. A few fish have begun to appear in the sandy bottom lake shallows. Yesterday a pair of loons were doing a courtship dance all over the lake....

Think Spring ... Hurry

Oh Boy, for our family, where our pets are concerned, it's been a long, sad winter. We lost two more of our pet pack since we lost Sadie just a few weeks ago. It's because years ago we acquired most of our pets while our daughters were little and growing up. Now Kate and Maggie are grown up and out of the house. The pets are getting older fast.

Let's see, two weeks ago our little black cat Flower died at 20 years old. We acquired her y...

I Promise

Good Bye, Good Girl. Sadie, one of our gentlest, little dogs, died quietly, like she lived, yesterday. She just went to sleep and never woke up.

Lori first found her 11 years ago in a corner horse stall in a dark, drafty barn all but forgotten by the world. She was just a few months old, the last of her litter, and had never been outside of that stall. She'd never seen the sunshine, or felt the wind in her face, or grass on her feet.

Lor...

Get Up Here

This is a public service message to all my Facebook Fishermen Union. I refer to you as the F.F.U.

Anyway guys, grab your tackle and get to Northern Wisconsin as fast as you can. The fish are Biting! (Note the capital B.) The weather is a little rainy with a little sun. They're calling for 80s next week. The spawn is on. The next couple of weeks will be gangbusters fishing. Tell the boss and tell your employer too but get up here.

In the mea...

Some Like It Real ... "Hot"!

Spring has arrived and is in full bloom here in the big woods. Pine pollen floats on the wind like a green fog. Flower baskets hang along the deck rail and blueberry blossoms fill the woods. Could it be another good berry year? It could be, but for a couple of big "ifs". If it rains. If it doesn't frost. We really need the rain.

Next falls firewood harvest is in full gear too. Scouting, cutting, carrying, splitting, stacking, and...

Hummingbird Watch ... Update

They're back. The hummingbirds. It was a few minutes before 9:00 this morning. The sun had finally come up above the pine tops at the east end of the lake when I first spotted it. It appeared out of the woods to buzz the feeder a couple of times then hoover above for a good long drink. It was a little red throat male. I join my good friend Ramona Moody in reporting these first little arrivals back to the north country from Mexican and ...

Weather or Not

If you don't like the weather in the great north woods in Wisconsin wait a few hours. I don't like getting tied down to a journal always talking about, recording, the weather. Of course, that's what people are interested in now and a hundred years from now.

Anyway, yesterday morning when I got up at 4 am it was 28 below zero, colder, literally, than a "Woodman's Tit. This morning at 4 am it was 26 above. Using 5th grade math I can tell you tha...
